Hey there! Chris here from Aeva AI receptionist for Healthcare.
I’ve been blown away recently by how many new AI receptionist companies are popping up, and more importantly, how many business owners in different industries are moving fast to adopt AI and get ahead of their competition.
There is a global Voice AI report that I have come across which goes deep into where the tech is today and what to expect for the future.
And what did I find when I looked at who’s really leading the charge with AI receptionists?
No surprise, healthcare is right near the top.

The recent global report by market.us valued the Voice AI agent market at US$3.2 billion this year, and projects it’ll hit US$47.5 billion by 2034. That’s not some “maybe one day” story, it’s already on the way there.
Why is it growing so fast?
Calls are still the preferred communication method for many
Customers expect instant, 24/7 support
Most companies are not equipped to have big admin departments
And voice AI tools are proving that they can actually help
The risk of growing too fast
When any tech trend takes off, there’s always a ‘gold rush’. AI receptionists are no different. The market is booming, and now everyone wants in.
In the past two months, I’ve watched company after company suddenly launch an “AI receptionist for healthcare” with an AI generated landing page, some branding, and a bold promise.
But here’s what most of them are actually doing under the hood:
Have no experience with voice AI systems (anyone can build a scrappy prototype now on platforms like vapi)
Sharing features that no practitioner actually wants
And creating bad impressions with unreliable and gimmicky AI receptionists
The good thing is, these companies wont be around for long, as soon as the next ‘gold rush’ appears, they will move on to the next thing. However, they will burn trust around AI receptionists as they go.
What makes an AI receptionist a ‘good’ one
So, what does a good AI receptionist actually look like, especially in a healthcare setting, where accuracy, professionalism and trust matter?
Here’s what we’ve learned from building and testing Aeva AI in hundreds of real clinics and businesses over the last two years:
1. It needs to collect information properly
It’s not enough for an AI to just “not be able to get an email address” and yet that’s exactly where many providers stop.
A good AI receptionist knows how to guide a caller through giving key details like:
Full name
Date of birth
Email address
Home address
Contact number
And it needs fallbacks.
If the collection of any of these details are wrong, there needs to be a way to update it and ensure it is correct.
These are simple details that are overlooked in a lot of the system I see.
2. It should sound human, not robotic
I’m not sure if you’ve tried an AI receptionist that sounds like it’s reading an audio book…
It’s really awkward.
Weird filler words. Unusual rhythm. No warmth.
That’s not good enough, especially not in healthcare.
A good AI receptionist voice is trained from a real human receptionist:
Sounds calm, natural, familiar
Like a friendly receptionist you’d hear over the phone
Makes patients feel like they’re speaking with someone professional
The whole goal is to make patients forget they’re speaking to AI. Not to trick them, but to make it comfortable.
3. It needs to escalate, not guess
This is a big one.
If the AI doesn’t know something, like “what exercises should I be doing?” it should not try to make something up (like most AI out there.)
A good AI receptionist will say something like:
“I’m not 100% sure about that, is it okay if I leave a priority message for my team to come back to you on this?”
OR it simply forwards the call to a human who is there to handle any calls the AI cant.
Bad AI tools make stuff up. Good AI tools escalate gracefully and confirm information is factual before sharing.
So where does this all go from here?
Here’s the reality: the AI receptionist space is going to get noisier before it gets better. A lot of half-baked tools will flood the market. Some will promise the world, burn a few clinics, and quietly disappear.
But the real value, the kind that improves operations, supports staff, and gives patients a better experience. Will come from companies that actually understand the day-to-day pressures clinics face, and who build for that from day one.
That’s where we’re staying focused. On helping real clinics run smoother and never miss another call.
My belief is simple:
A great AI receptionist shouldn’t just save you time. It should feel like a better version of what you already trust, just without the limits.
Keep innovating,
