Hey there! - Chris here from Aeva AI Receptionist for Healthcare.
Last week I shared the news of ChatGPT 5 being released. After a full week of extensive testing:
The verdict is? it’s not reliable enough yet.
The model was very impressive in some ways, but it failed too often at tasks that are vital for AI receptionists. It hallucinated facts, made wrong assumptions, and struggled with tools like checking for available appointment times. For what we need for AI receptionists in practices, that’s a deal breaker.
It will get there, and when it does, we’ll be the first to roll it out. But for now, our responsibility is to keep you on the most reliable tech, not the newest headline.
How fast are AI receptionists going to improve?
Faster than you think.
Right now, when someone rings your clinic, there’s a small pause before an AI receptionist speaks. That pause (usually about a second) is the whole process: hearing the caller, transcribing the request, deciding what to do, and responding with a natural voice.
One second might not sound like much, but our job is to make it feel like zero.
The next big leap is coming with voice-to-voice conversations. Today, most AI receptionists process calls like this:
Listen to the audio.
Convert it to text.
Decide on a reply.
Convert that text back to audio.
That’s fast, but the conversion steps add friction. What’s next is a system that understands audio directly, no transcription needed. Voice in, voice out.
That means almost no perceptible delay. It will feel like a natural, human conversation, no delayed responses.
We expect this to be ready for implementation within the next few months. Big players like Meta are pouring big investment into the core technology, which tells us it’s close.

Meta (Facebook) is stepping into the party
Meta’s been making big moves in voice AI lately, quietly buying up companies that specialise in natural-sounding voices and emotional tone detection, and showing off research that can translate and respond to speech in real time across over a hundred languages. You can read more about this here.
This is a good sign for all of us. It means the future of real-time, natural AI conversations is arriving faster than expected and when Meta’s tech is ready, we’ll be among the first to put it to work for you.
Their breakthroughs become our building blocks. We take the best of what the big players create, tailor it for healthcare, and make sure it’s safe, reliable, and ready for our customer’s front desk before it talks to a patient.
That’s it from me this week. Back to the workbench where we are improving every part of Aeva so practices have the fastest, smartest, and most reliable AI receptionist possible.
Until next week 💪,
